What is Alopecia Areata?
What’s it associated with?
Which areas are m/c affected?
- Chronic, immune-mediated disorder that targets anagen hair, resulting in well- circumscribed, non-scarring hair loss
- Associated with stress & other AI conditions
- M/C scalp, beard, eyebrows, eyelashes
What S&S are associated with Alopecia Areata?
- Shiny & smooth skin where hair is lost
- Scalp WNL
- Exclamation point hairs
- Positive Pull test in active dz (pull on 10 hairs and they just come out)
- Nail pitting
How do you treat Alopecia Areata?
- Steroids (intralesional = M/C)
- Topical Minoxidil
- Baricitinib

Androgenetic Alopecia (Male and Female patterns)
What is Androgenetic Alopecia?
Typically slow, progressive non-scarring hairloss occurring in a patterned distribution
What pattern is seen with Male Pattern Hairloss?
- Bitemporal regression and vertex thinning
- Gradual thinning after puberty
How do you treat Male Pattern Hairloss?
- Daily Finasteride (Propecia)
- Minoxidil (Rogaine)
- Hair Transplant
- Platelet rich plasma
- Low-level laser light therapy
What pattern is seen with Female Pattern Hairloss?
Retention of the frontal hairline and diffuse thinning of the vertex scalp
How do you treat Female Pattern Hairloss?
- Minoxidil (Rogaine) = only FDA approved tx
What is Trichotillomania?
Self induced form of alopecia secondary to compulsive hair pulling/twisting
How do you treat Trichotillomania?
- Stress/anxiety mmmgmt
- Psych eval
- Avoid behavior
