A
Pus collection in Retropharyngeal space (back of throat)

What are the causes of Retropharyngeal Abscesses? (2 things)
A
Caused by infections that drain to LATERAL Retropharyngeal Lymph Nodes:
- Secondary to other URTIs / Otitis Media (S aureus / GAS)
- Secondary to trauma (foreign body e.g fishbone / Endoscopy)

What are the CF of Retropharyngeal Abscesses? (7 things)
A
- Fever
- Swollen Pharynx + Lymph nodes
- Dysphagia + Odynophagia
- SOB
- Cough
- Stridor
- Neck pain / stiffness

A
- Bloods (FBC + Culture) (start wid dis)
- CT Neck w Contrast (GOLD)
- Lateral Neck XR

What will be seen in a CT Neck w Contrast (GOLD) in Retropharyngeal Abscesses? (3 things)
A
- Hypodense collection in retropharyngeal space (see pic)
- Thickening of prevertebral space
- Air / air-fluid levels

What will be seen in a Lateral Neck XR in Retropharyngeal Abscesses? (2 things)
A
- Widened retropharyngeal space (thickened soft tissue)
- Gas in retropharyngeal space

- Airway management by intubation (if obst)
- Surgical drainage
- Abx (Ampicillin)
