Urology drugs Flashcards
Example of alpha blocker drug?
Doxazosin
How does doxazosin work?
Selective, competitive alpha1-adrenergic receptor antagonist, decreases peripheral vascular resistance leading to decreased blood pressure. Also selectively blocks a1 receptors in urological smooth muscle so reduces symptoms
What class of drug is finasteride?
5 alpha reductase inhibitor/anti-androgen
How does finasteride work?
Inhibits 5a reductase, preventing conversion of testosterone which is needed for growth of prostate tissue
Indications for doxazosin and finasteride?
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Doxasozin also used in HTN, finasteride also used in male pattern baldness
Side effects of finasteride?
Impotence, reduced libido, ejaculation disorders, breast tenderness and enlargement - could represent breast Ca, testicular pain
Example of xanthine oxidase inhibitor?
Allopurinol
How does allopurinol work?
Inhibits xanthine oxidase so lowers levels of uric acid in the plasma and urine
Indications for allopurinol?
Gout and renal stone prophylaxis, prophylaxis of hyperuricaemia associated with cancer chemo
Use of allopurinol and which drugs increases the risk of rashes?
Ampicillin/amoxicillin
Why does allopurinol use need to be stopped immediately if skin rashes develop?
Could progress to Stevens-Johnsons syndrome or Toxic Epidermal Necrosis
