Urine Tests Flashcards
What is the function of Urinalysis?
Urinalysis studies urine specimens for colour, clarity, specific gravity, protein (albumin), glucose (sugar), and blood. The sediment is viewed microscopically for organisms, intact cells and crystals.
What are the procedures for obtaining urine specimens?
- Voided urine specimen
- Clean catch / midstream urine specimen
- Catheterized urine specimen
What is a “voided urine specimen”?
The patient voids into a clean container.
What is a “clean catch or midstream urine specimen”?
The nursing staff uses a special cleansing technique to obtain this type of specimen.
What is a “catheterized urine specimen”?
this specimen is sterile and is obtained by catheterizing the patient. This procedure is usually done for C & S testing, which is performed by microbiology.
List 3 “Manual” urine tests:
- Urine pregnancy test
- Occult blood / Hemoccult / Guaiac test
- Microscopic examination of urine sedimentation
List 2 “Automated” urine tests:
- UA - urinalysis, routine urine test (urine dip)
2. Urine drug test
What is a “24hr creatinine clearance test”?
This test measures the ability of the kidney to remove creatinine from the blood. A blood sample is drawn, and the amount of creatine concentration is compared with the amount of creatinine excreted in the urine during a 24hr period.
What is the start and end times for the “Urine for 24hr Creatinine Clearance test”?
Start @ 0600 the next day
Finish @ 0600 the next day + 1 (the day after)
What is ticked off on the “Urine for 24hr Creatinine Clearance test” requisition?
Under Urine:
- 24 hour
- fill in start and finish time and dates (always 0600)
- height
- weight
- creatinine clearance
What time is the “24hr Creatinine Clearance” blood test ordered for?
1800 the next day (middle of the 24hr period between the 0600 and 0600 urine times)
What do you write in the addressograph area for the urine and blood creatinine clearance test requisitions?
- Blood req “24hr. Cr. Cl.”
- Urine req “Urine for 24hr. Cr. Cl.”
How would you fill in the Lab section of the Kardex for a 24hr creatinine clearance order?
(T date) / 24hr Cr Cl start @ 0600 (T + 1 date)
finish @ 0600 (T + 2 date)
(T date) / Cr for Cr Cl draw @ 1800 (T + 1 date)
