What is the BCCDC?
BC Centre for Disease Control is an agency of the
Provincial Health Services Authority and is responsible
for providing public health programs and expertise in
the areas of communicable disease control,
environmental health, and laboratory services.
What is the function of provincial lab tests?
These tests are mostly serology and immunology tests.
What is serology?
Serology tests are done to detect antibody levels in the serum portion of the blood.
What is immunology?
The study of all aspects of the immune system.
Name 6 serological tests and the specimen that is collected.
- Anti-streptolysin “O” titer – blood
- brucella – blood
- diphtheria – blood
- pertussis – blood
- H-pylori – blood, sputum, stool
- Borrelia Burgdorfei – blood
What specimens are used in a Syphilis test?
Blood, CSF & exudate
Name a mycobacteriological test. What specimens are
collected?
Acid-fast bacilli – sputum, urine, body fluids/tissue,
CSF, gastric washings
TB - sputum
Name 2 virus serological tests and what specimen is
collected.
Epstein-Barr virus – blood
Mycoplasma Serology – blood
What is the name of the parasitology test? What
specimen is collected?
Ova and Parasites – stool
