What is a function of a bone marrow biopsy and aspiration?

A

A bone marrow biopsy offers detailed information about the condition of the types, amount and condition of newly forming blood cells. It is used to diagnose numerous conditions such as anemias, infectious diseases, leukemias etc.

What is the bone marrow biopsy and aspiration procedure?

A

Its a painful procedure performed by the Physician, and the patient is offered either IV sedation or a local anesthetic. A syringe is used to draw the liquid portion of the bone marrow (aspiration) and a different needle is inserted for the bone marrow biopsy where a core sample is taken.
