ABG's Flashcards
What is an ABG test?
An arterial blood gas test is a blood test that is performed to determine the concentration of oxygen, carbon dioxide, bicarbonate and pH in the blood.
List some reasons why an ABG test would be ordered
- Evaluate severe breathing problems and lung diseases
- Evaluate the need for extra oxygen
- To qualify for home oxygen use
- Measure the acid-base level for certain conditions
- Detect exposure to carbon monoxide and other chemicals
Where is a sample for ABG drawn from and who usually collects it?
The sample is usually taken from the radial artery in the wrist, but arteries in the elbow (brachial), and groin (femoral) may also be used.
The Respiratory Technician obtains the specimen.
