Risk factors for UTI?
Being female Pregnancy Menopause Sexual intercourse Immunosuppression Catheter in situ
What urine dipstick result would indicate UTI?
Leucocytes, nitrites, trace blood
What organisms cause UTIs?
Most commonly E coli
Can also be Proteus mirabilis or Klebsiella
What is the broad management for UTIs?
Urine dipstick, send MSU for cultures, antibiotics as appropriate per cultures, advise plenty of fluids and regular voiding
What is the management of UTIs in pregnant women?
Antibiotics for all bacteriuria
Refer to obs consultant
What is the management of UTIs in non-pregnant women?
Antibiotics as appropriate for sensitivity of MSU - if upper, IV co-amox then oral co-amox when afebrile, if lower then nitro/trimethoprim
Advise to drink plenty of fluids, cranberry juice
Consider blood cultures if systemically unwell
What is the management of UTIs in men?
Consider course of quinolone HOWEVER if >65 and asymptomatic, antibiotics not recommended
Refer to urologist as UTI likely due to anatomical/functional anomaly
