Urinary System Flashcards
Which kidney lies at a more superior level?
Left kidney
Why the right kidney lie at a more inferior level than the left?
Due to the liver
On what rib level do the kidneys lie?
T12/L3
On what rib level does the left kidney lie
11 and 12
Where can perinephric fat be found?
Between the renal capsule and renal fascia
What is the function of perinephric fat?
To protect and cushion the kidney
Where can parinephric fat be found?
Superficial to the kindey
What organs are found on the anterior surface of the right kidney?
liver, ascending colon, right colic flexure, right suprarenal gland
What organs are found on the anterior surface of the left kidney?
spleen, pancreas, stomach, left colic flexure, descending colon
What organ lies posteriorly to the kidneys?
The diaphragm
In what region of the kidney are the renal corpuscles found?
Cortex of nephrons
How can you distinguish left from right kidney?
The ureter lies most posteriorly. Renal vein lies most anteriorly. From there you can work out anterior and posterior and therefore left and right.
What structures form the uteric pelvis
minor caylces drain into the mayor caylces and into the renal pelvis and then the uteric pelvis.
What do renal veins flow into?
Inferior vena cava
Where does the left gonadal vein drain into?
Left renal vein
Where does the right gonadal vein drain into?
Inferior vena cava
When looking at a kidney hilum, what is the most anterior structure that runs into it?
The renal vein
How can you distinguish between right and left kidneys?
The ureter is always most posterior and points down towards the bladder.
At what vertebra level does the left renal artery drain from the descending aorta?
L1/L2
Where do the adrenal glands lie in relation to the kindeys?
Supramedially
When you open the kidney to see its internal structures, along which plane do you slice it?
Longitudinally
Where does the main vessel leading from the adrenal glands drain into?
Renal vein
Where do the small adrenal arteries drain from?
Descending aorta
When looking at a bisected kidney, what kind of fat do you expect has been taken off it?
Perinephric fat
At what vertebra levels do the kidneys lie?
T12 - L3
What two muscles do the kidneys lie on?
psoas muscle and quadratus lumbar muscle
What are the three nerves of the posterior abdominal wall?
subcostal, iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal
Where does the subcostal nerve originate from?
T12
Where do the ilioinguinal and the iliohypogastric nerve originate from?
L1
What type of nerves are the posterior abdominal wall nerves?
somatic
What muscle does the uterer pass over?
psoas major
