What does the upper tract of the urinary tract consist of?
kidneys and ureters
What does the lower tract of the urinary tract consist of?
bladder and urethra
Which sympathetic nerve controls storage of urine?
Hypogastric n (T10-L2)
Which parasympathetic nerve controls voiding of the bladder?
pelvic n (S2-S4)
Which somatic nerve controls the external urethral sphincter?
pudendal nerve (S2-4)
What is the definition of urinary incontinence?
ANY involuntary leakage of urine
What is the definition of stress urinary incontinence?
involuntary leakage on effort or exertion, on sneezing or coughing
What is the definition of urge urinary incontinence?
involuntary leakage accompanied by or immediately preceded by urgency
What are the risk factors for urinary incontinence?
age parity menopause smoking medical problems increased intra abdominal pressure pelvic floor trauma denervation connective tissue disease surgery
How does an irritated bladder present?
Urgency; sudden compelling desire to void that is difficult to defer Increased daytime frequency (>7) Nocturia (>1) Dysuria Haematuria
How does an overactive bladder present?
Urgency usually associated with frequency, nocturia and urgency incontinence
How does incontinence present?
Stress UI
Urgency UI
Coital incontinence
Severity: how many pads/day?
What does a urinary diary assess and how long should it be done for?
fluid intake: quantity and quality urine output (exclude nocturnal polyuria) daytime frequency nocturia average voided volume
