Urinary Incontinence Flashcards
1
Q
What is urinary incontinence?
A
involuntary voiding
2
Q
Is urinary incontinence a disease?
A
no
3
Q
What are the different types of urinary incontinence?
A
- stress incontinence
- overflow incontinence
- overactive bladder
4
Q
What is the etiology/pathology of stress incontinence?
A
- sphincter is weakened
- increased intra-abdominal pressure (laughing, coughing)
- normally this pressure is on the bladder and also on the sphincter, which fortifies it
- if there is a change in the urethro-vesicular angle (ex. pelvic descent after childbirth) the pressure changes and is only on the bladder
5
Q
What is the etiology/pathology of overflow incontinence?
A
- intravesicular pressure exceeds urethra pressure
- retention and bladder distention
6
Q
What is the etiology/pathology of overactive bladder?
A
- hyperactive detrusor muscle
- neurogenic or myogenic problem
7
Q
How is urinary incontinence treated?
A
- drugs (ex. alpha adrenergic agonist to fortify the sphincter)
- surgery (artificial sphincter, prosthesis)
