What causes genital herpes?
infection with herpes simplex virus type 2
Where does the herpes simplex virus type 2 like to replicate and why is it problematic?
it is neurotropic - it likes to replicate inside neurons, which is a problem because once these are damaged they often cannot be repaired/regenerate
How are genital herpes spread?
through contact with the microbe - contact with the lesions or secretions
Does genital herpes have an incubation period?
yes, of 2-10 days
What are manifestations of genital herpes?
- burning at the site
- painful vesicles
- fever, muscle aches
- sometimes it is subclinical
Is there a cure for genital herpes?
no
How is genital herpes treated?
- treat the symptoms
- treat flare-ups with antivirals (this will get rid of MOST of the viral particles, but not all, it will recur)
