most often due to HPV strains 6 and 11
What are genital warts?
multiple, benign, cauliflower-like growths that are very painful
Where do genital warts occur?
can be genital or anorectal
Do genital warts have an incubation period?
yes, 1-2 months
Is there a cure for genital warts?
no
How do you treat genital warts?
- remove with surgery, cryotherapy or topical anti-mitotic or cytotoxic drugs
What do you need to monitor for in patients with genital warts?
cervical cancer - it is unlikely for someone to only contract one strain of HPV, they could have contracted HPV strains 16 or 18, which can cause cancer
What strains of HPV does the Guardasil vaccination protect against?
strains 6 and 11 (which cause genital warts) and 16 and 18 (which can cause cervical cancer)
How long does a Guardasil vaccination protect you? How many shots do you need?
5 years, need 3 shots
