Are sexually transmitted diseases only transmitted by sexual contact?
A
no, they are transmitted by genitalia, mouth, rectum, skin, placenta

What causes STDs?
A
- viruses (in which case they are usually recurrent)
ex. genital herpes, genital warts, AIDS - bacteria (can be eliminated)
ex. syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea - protozoa, fungi and ectoparasites

A
no - women are at higher risk because their genitals have more surface area

Is there a difference diagnosing men vs. women?
A
yes - women may more often go undiagnosed as lesions may be internal
