What is involved in assessment for the urinary patient?
-establish normal preferences
(What ground does dog prefer, daily routine, litter type, privacy)
-any concurrent medications or conditions causing polyuria
-hydration status
-vital signs

Nursing interventions for the urinary patient?
-keep patient and kennel clean and dry
-clip perineum and apply barrier cream where there is a risk or urine scalding
-provide medication if directed by VS
-maintain fluid therapy
-assisted feeding
-maintain body temperature
-stress reduction
How should the bladder be expressed?
-use aseptic techniques
-take steps to reduce trauma
-check bladder size regularly
What should be checked when urinary catheter is in place?
-catheter site for swelling, infection, inflammation
-empty bag every 4 hours at a minimum
-check lines aren’t kinked or blocked
-prevent self-mutilation
-monitor ins and outs
-observe for fluid overload
What should be recorded during interventions for the urinary patient?
-any abnormal outputs
-appearance
-dipstick or SG results
-urination posture
-urination frequency
-body weight and muscle mass
-hydration status and water intake

How to nurse dysphagic patients?
-keep feeding times calm
-change food consistency or elevated feeding
-gastric feeding tube care
How is tube feeding care carried out?
-must be placed 10-12 hours prior to use
-placed for minimum 10 days
-clean stoma site
-change dressings daily
-check for leakage, obstruction, infection, patient interference, discomfort, nausea
How to care for regurgitating patients?
-elevated feeding
-change food consistency
-small meals often
-no exercise before or after eating
-gastric feeding tube care
How to care for vomiting patients?
-gut rest and highly digestible foods
-assisted feeding
-provide anti-emetics
-record frequency, type and volume of vomit
-IVFT
