Fewer nephrons, loss of muscle tone, inefficient emptying of the bladder

How should you care for an indwelling catheter?
Use soap and water, clean at least 3 times a day and after defecation
Check for kinks and sediment in tubing

What is the infection caused by catheters called?
CAUTI
How can we prevent CAUTI?
Use surgical aseptic technique when inserting catheter
Do daily foley care
Remove catheter as soon as possible
Manifestations of CAUTI
Urinary frequency, urgency, nocturia, hematuria, cloudy foul smelling urine
New incontinence, confusion
What causes stress incontinence?
Laughing, sneezing, lifting
What causes urge incontinence?
Inability to stop urine flow
What causes overflow incontinence?
Urinary retention, spills over
What causes reflex incontinence?
dysfunction in the muscle in your bladder
What causes functional incontinence?
Loss of urine due to factors that interfere with responding to the need to urinate
What causes transient incontinence?
Reversible, due to UTI
How can we manage and help fix incontince?
Bladder retraining, urinary habit training
How to obtain midstream urine sample?
Cleanse urethral meatus of bacteria by urinating a small amount before collecting
Meaning of oliguria?
urinary output less than 400 ml per day or less than 20 ml per hour
