urinary diseases Flashcards
Inflammation of the filtration membrane within the renal corpuscle, causing increased membrane permeability; plasma proteins and blood cells enter the filtrate, causing increased urine volume due to increased osmotic concentration of the filtrate
Glomerulonephritis
Often occurs 1-3 weeks after a severe bacterial infection, such as strep throat; normally subsides after several days
Acute glomerulonephritis
Long-term and progressive process whereby the filtration membrane thickens and is eventually replaced by connective tissue and the kidneys become nonfunctional
Chronic glomerulonephritis
Can result from any condition that interferes with kidney function
renal failure
Occurs when damage to the kidney is rapid and extensive; leads to accumulation of wastes in the blood; can lead to death in 1-2 weeks if renal failure is complete
Acute renal failure
Results from permanent damage to so many nephrons that the remaining nephrons are inadequate for normal kidney function; can be caused by chronic glomerulonephritis, trauma to the kidneys,
Chronic renal failure
