What is urinalysis?
Checking the appearance, concentration and content of urine
Why would we do urinalysis?
Non invasive
Immediate
Monitor deviations
What are the characteristics of urine?
Clear
Not cloudy
Inoffensive smell
Talk through the procedure of urinalysis
Make sure collection/storage/handling is sterile
Gain informed consent
Perform asap after collection
Wash hands and don apron & gloves
Collect in a clean & dry container
Observe for colour, clarity and odour
Dip stick, immersing all reagent pads
Tilt and blot on paper towel to remove excess
Read at specified times & compare to chart
Dispose of urine & strip to trust policy
Remove gloves and wash hands
Discuss findings
Document and take appropriate action as per NMC Code
