Q

URI

what pharm to avoid in URI

A
  • Cough suppressants may increase viral replication and have no proven benefit. Should be avoided in ped’s.
  • Topical decongestant sprays for rhinorrhea should not be used more than 2-3 days - may cause rebound sx
  • Oral decongestants (sudafed) –> tachycardia, palpitations, hypertension.
  • Older adults: antihistamines not recommended (anticholinergic effects - confusion, cognitive impairment, delirium, dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, sedation)
