There is no official definition. In the UK, it is related to the presence of a Cathedral. Now it is said to be a t least 300,000 residents and a distinct identity that is the centre of a wider area
Describe the distribution in mega cities and how it has changed over time
Currently, the majority of megacities is in South Asia with about
3 or 4 in Europe and 7 in the Americas. 2 in Africa
In 1990 the majority was in the Americas with none in Europe, Africa or Australasia. and 4 in South Asia
Make an estimate at Urban % of the population in the these Continents : Africa, Asia, Europe, North America
In the time periods of 1950, 1980, 2015

What are the causes of Urbanisation
Natural growth (greater birth than death rate) Push factors such as: Not earning money No job Bad education Drought famine Pull factors such as: Greater food More jobs more opportunities More money can be made- then send back money Job security Dream Education Freedom of speech
What are the consequences of rapid urbanisation
- Impact on health
- Impact on housing
- access to services
- Social instability
Where are slums found
On marginal land - Is undesirable and has little potential for profit. e.g. steep slopes, flood plains, near noisy transport.
what are the social, economic and environmental consequences of informal settlements
Soc: Bad education, low pay jobs, bad sanitation, little to no health care.
Env : polluted, no plants or trees, lots of rubbish with no paid workers to pick it up, no bins
Eco: very little money, street selling and rubbish picking for money. No banking.
