What are the causes of urban growth?
Natural population - 15-40 ages, fertile so there is a rate of natural increase
Rural-Urban Migration - push and pull factors. Push factors include areas of land being over-farmed, desertification, local disease and low levels of medical provision. Pull factors include employment that is better paid, basic social privations such as education and better quality of life
What is the brown agenda?
A mix of social and environmental problems brought about by raid growth and industrialisation
What are some of the solutions to the brown agenda?
A basic urban environmental profile is to be undertaken
Risks and impacts should be assessed
Actions plans put into place
Support groups to be established
How has Mumbai become urbanised?
Over the past 60 years it has increased in size from its original fishing village.
This is because of its access to the sea.
The port becomes industrialised causing problems for planners
What are the problems of Mumbai’s urbanisation?
Overcrowding (1 million/sq mile)
Homes built on waste land unsuitable for habitation
The street is the toilet
Doctors deal with diphtheria and typhoid (4000 a day)
Water is rationed
Sewage filters into the water
What are the positives of Mumbai’s urbanisation?
Informal shopping areas to buy anything
Pottery areas that have grown over time
Central social squares
Great sense of community
How is urbanisation in Mumbai being combatted?
$2 billion project aims to build smaller houses to resettle those in the slum areas
Aims to reduce crime
14 storey apartments will separate communities
Only those who have lived in the slums since 2000 will be relocated
How would those who live in the slums want them to redeveloped?
All family members in the same room Better ventilation Extra rooms More toilets Maintaining a communal space Living space for pottery in a communal kiln
