Why does suburbanisation take place?
Growth of public transport and private car ownership means the ‘wealthy’ can love further from the workplace
What is suburbanisation?
The process of population mixing from the central cities to the suburbs or rural-urban fringe
How did suburbanisation change in the UK between the 1930s and 1960s?
1930s - few planning controls led to ribbon development next to roads
1940s - growth became a concern; green belts were set up to combat this
1950s - suburbanisation is better planned
1960s - council houses built, town edges became desirable for parking and greenbelt control was ignored
What significant event in 1977 changed housing once again in the UK?
Population projections that by 2021 the population of England would rise by 7%
The number of households would increase by 18%
What were the solutions the 1977 projections?
Increasing the amount of people in homes e.g. lodgers
Building new homes on brownfield sites (reusing land)
Building homes on greenfield sites (cheaper land)
What are suburbanised villages? (Give an example)
Dormitory or commuter villages with a residential workforce employed in urban areas e.g. Newport
