Lack of basic services
E.g. clean running water, electricity and sewerage system
Open sewers running through the streets - often contaminate the clean water supplies.
Electricity is often stolen from overhead pylons from neighbouring towns - often leads to fires
Favelas are overcrowded
Families up to 10 living in one or two rooms - conditions are terrible - poor standard of living
Diseases
Life expectancy in favelas - 48
E.g. cholera and diarrhoea spread quickly
Medical treatment are extremely expensive and most can not afford to pay the expenses
Criminal Gangs
They control many of the favelas
Drug dealing, kidnapping and murder are common
More than 6000 people killed each year
Police are not seen around the favelas often - they view favelas as out of their jurisdiction
