Malaria Strategies Flashcards
Bed Nets
Placed over beds at night to stop mosquitoes from biting people.
- very effective in stopping the press of malaria - cheap (about £5) and easy to introduce to communities
Building Dams
The water trapped behind the dam can be released; this then flushes our the streams and breeding grounds which drowns the larve.
- effective - but a lot of human labour is required - impractical and expensive
Drainage of Breeding Grounds
Drain areas where mosquitoes are bred -ponds, swamps and paddy fields.
- effective - mosquitoes can’t survive without stagnant water but it is impossible to drain every breeding ground.
Fish
Placing fish into areas of stagnant water - mosquito larve will be eaten by muddy loach fish.
- effective - stops mosquito population from spreading - fish can be eaten to add protein to humans diet.
Mustard Seeds
Sprinkle mustard seeds in stagnant water.
- effective - mustard seeds are sticky - mosquito larve stick to the seeds and sink down to the bottom of the water which will drown them.
Cover windows and doors with gauze
Stops mosquitoes entering the homes - mosquitoes like to bite ankles and arms - gauze stops this.
- effective method as it is cheap
Infect coconuts with Bti bacteria
Infecting the coconuts and then throwing them into stagnant water - encourage larve to ear them.
- effective - when the larve eats the coconuts the bacteria kills them
Education Programmes
Run from local villages - people are educated on the disease - people are encouraged to use gauzes and bed nets.
- effective - local people generally take all reasonable precautions against malaria.
