Urban Fieldwork Flashcards
Fieldwork question
How does the environmental quality vary and the land use change with distance from the CBD?
Hypothesis
The environmental quality of London improves with distance and the land use changes from
commercial to residential as you move away from the CBD.
Where was it taken
Fieldwork undertaken along a transect from Aldgate Station to Bow Interchange (along the A11)
What were the 8 sampling sites
Aldgate Square, Altab Ali Park, Whitechapel Station, O’Leary Square, Ocean Estate, Mile End Green Bridge, Bow Road Station, Bow Interchange
Systematic sampling:
Samples are chosen in a regular/ordered way. Evenly or regularly spaced e.g. every 10th person.
Systematic sampling advantages
No knowledge needed of population being sampled.
No bias/will be fair.
Don’t need random numbers.
Systematic sampling disadvantages
May lead to misrepresentation of the pattern/population
Stratified sampling:
Using known information, the sample size is divided up into categories. Each category is surveyed according to the proportion of their representation within the sample size. E.g. 100 people with 80 women and 20 men - a survey of 10 people would require 8 women and 2 men.
Stratified sampling advantages
Gives an accurate representation of the whole population Removes bias
Stratified sampling disadvantages
Must have detailed prior knowledge
May not have access to each category
Random sampling:
Sample points selected at random with no pattern or sequence. Requires a random number generator.
Random sampling advantages
Removes any human bias from the process/will be fair.
No knowledge needed of population being sampled.
Random sampling disadvantages
Can lead to poor representation of the overall population
Primary data
the first hand data gathered by the researcher using methods such as interviews and questionnaires.
Secondary data
data collected by someone else and found in sources such as books, journal articles and the internet.
My fieldwork techniques
Environmental quality survey Land use survey (RICEPOTS): Pedestrian count
Traffic count
Questionnaire Photographs
You need to consider the strengths and weaknesses of all data collection methods.
See booklet
My data presentation methods
Radar graph/ rose diagram, pie, bar and line charts, scattergraphs, flow diagrams, annotated photographs
Analyse = (for 8 marker)
investigate an issue by breaking it down into individual components and making logical, evidence-based connections about the causes and effects or interrelationships between the concepts.
Evaluate = (for 8 marker)
measure the value or success of something and ultimately provide a substantiated judgement/ conclusion. Review information and then bring it together.
Risk assessment
Getting hit by a car
Getting assaulted by a stranger
Getting ill due to air pollution if have any underlying health issues
Getting lost from the rest of the group in a busy area
