Urban dynamics Flashcards
What are the urban dynamics (9)
Consolidation
Urban renewal
Urban decay
Decentralization
Exurbanisation
Spatial exclusion
urban village
counterurbanisation
Suburbanisation
What is suburbanisation
the movement of people, house and employment away from the inner city towards the outer urban areas.
Due to the Australian Dream - desire for quarter acre black, and development and introduction of motor cars
Impact of suburbanisation
- Urban sprawl
- congestion
- development of new suburbs
- development of new transport (west and north connex)
- ## social inequality
What is urban decay
The deterioration of the urban environment, where urban infrastructure falls into despair and buildings are left empty for long periods of time
Explain of Urban decay in Sydney
Economic restructuring from 19th century manufacturing and warehouse retail to advanced banking and technology.
In turn left Pyrmont and Ultimo harbor areas full of factories obsolete. lack of employment also led people to move away from the CBD furthering suburbanization, intensifying the decay.
- Caused the ‘flight to the suburbs’
What is urban renewal
redevelopment and renovation of decayed or blighted areas making it relevant to the economic, pollical and social needs of the city and its residents
Explain urban renewal in sydney
Pyrmont and Ultimo - renewal under federal government’s “building better cities program’ including the construction of 9 000 dwellings 16 apartment blocks forming Jackson’s landing
Barangaroo
What is urban consolidation
policy designed to increase population densities by the construction of medium to high density housing
Example of urban consolidation in Sydney
Balmain
construction of 42000 apartments in the form of vertical villages over the next 4 years
Advantages of urban consolidation
- reduce reliance on cars since consolidation in CBD
- No landed need to be cleared therefore less natural species impacted
- more efficient use of existing physical and social infrastructure
- reduced costs
- reduces urban sprawl
Disadvantages of Urban consolidation
- fear of oversupply of medium to high density housing
- contempery architecture destroying heritage architecture (homologized landscapes)
- increase population density, overwhelming public infrastructure
- increase social polarization
What is counter urbanisation
relocation of people and employment from large to smaller urban center’s or rural areas.
Example of counter urbanisation
Sea change - movement to rural coastal communities (Byron bay, Coffs harbour) mainly retirees
Tree change - migration to inland rural towns e.g. bathurst and orange - mainly young families
What is decentralisation
The movement of activities by government policies or incentives (transport subsides, low interest, cheap land) either out of the CBD or City
Promotes
Example of Decentralization
State Emergency Service (SES) state headquarters for NSW has moved to Wollongong
