Upperlimb Nerves and Vessels Flashcards
Do arteries run below or above the retinaculum?
Above so they will not be cut off by an increase in pressure
What is the order of the arteries?
Subclavian, axillary, brachial, ulnar and radial, palmar arch and then phalangeal
Is the ulnar or radial artery more important?
Ulnar
Which digits does the ulnar artery supply?
3.5 digits starting from the smallest finger
Which digits does the radial artery supply?
1.5 digits starting from the thumb
Where do the radial and ulnar arteries terminate?
Palmar arches
What does the ulnar artery supply?
Forearm and hand
What does the radial artery supply?
Lateral aspect of the forearm
Where do the cephalic and basilic vein begin?
Dorsal venous arch at the hand
Where do superficial veins run?
On the back of the hand so they are not compressed
Where do the cephalic and basilic vein marge?
Median cubital vein
Where are blood tests taken from?
Median cubital vein because it is at a consistent location in all people
Which lymphatic duct drains the right upper limb?
Right lymphatic duct
Which lymphatic duct drains the left upper limb?
Thoracic duct
Lymphatics follow the veins of the upper limb and drain to?
The axillary lymph node
Where does the axillary lymph node drain to?
It drains to the lymph trunks via the venous system
What else does the axillary node drain?
Chest, neck, breast
What muscles does the musculocutaneous nerve supply?
Flexor muscles of the arm, biceps, brachialis, coracobrachialis
Where does the musculocutaneous nerve arise from?
c5,c6,c7
What skin does the musculocutaneous nerve supply?
The lateral skin of the forearm
Where does the median nerve arise from?
c5,c6,c7,c8,t1
What muscles do the median nerve supply?
Flexor muscles of the forearm
What skin does the median nerve supply?
3.5 digits of the hand and the nail beds
Where does the ulnar nerve arise?
c8, t1
What muscles does the ulnar nerve supply?
Intrinsic muscles of the hand
What skin does the ulnar nerve supply?
1.5 digits of the hand
Where does the musculocutaneous nerve run?
Deep to the biceps, it is rarely injured
Where does the median nerve run?
Beneath the carpal tunnel, it can be injured in carpal tunnel syndrome
Where does the ulnar nerve run?
Past the medial epicondyle and over the flexor retinculum
Where does the axillary nerve arise?
c5,c6
What muscles does the axillary nerve supply?
Deltoid, abductors of the shoulder
What skin does the axillary nerve supply?
Military badge area
Where does the axillary nerve run?
Near the head of the humerus and can be injured during a dislocation of the shoulder or a fracture of the surgical neck
Where does the radial nerve arise?
c5,c6,c7,c8,t1
What muscles does the radial nerve supply?
Flexors of the forearm and the triceps
What skin does the radial nerve supply?
Posterior skin of the arm and forearm and also part of the back on the hand but not including nailbeds
Where does the radial nerve run?
Between the medial and lateral heads of the triceps and on the shaft of the humerus, can be injured during a fracture of the humerus.
