- Rhinitis

In a child, what will indicate whether a URTI is bacterial or viral?
A
- If child is illl = bacterial
- If child is well = viral

What is rhinitis + state its symptoms
A
- inflammatory condition that causes excess mucous prodution in nose
- seasonal = hay fever
-Symptoms: blocked, runny nose, itchy nose, sneezing etc

State other features of rhinitis
A
- can be an early symptom of the following:
- pneumonia, bronchiolitis, meningitis, septiciaemia

What is ottis media + state its symptoms
A
- primary viral infection; ear infection>accumulation of ear discharge
- spontaneous rupture of ear drum
- secondary infection with pneumococcus/HI
Symptoms:
-fever, vomiting, ear pain, malaise, red ear drum + temprorary hearing loss

Treatment of otitis media
A
- Abx may/not help
- Analgesia relieves pain?

What is tonsilitis/pharyngitis
A
- viral/bacterial ( throat swab)
- If bacterial, give penicillin 10 days, but not amoxicillin(resistance)
- caused by adenoviruses?
