What does the olfactory nerve test?
Smell
What does the optic nerve test?
Peripheral vision
What does the oculomotor nerve test?
Pupil constriction as a reaction to light
What does the trochlear nerve test?
Ability to move eye downward and in
What does the trigeminal nerve test?
Sensation of face
Corneal reflex
Ability to clench teeth
What does abducens nerve test?
Ability to move eyes away from midline
What does facial nerve test?
Assess symmetry of facial expressions
Taste on anterior 2/3 of tongue
What does vestibulocochlear nerve test?
Hearing and balance
What does glossopharyngeal nerve test?
Gag reflex
Taste on posterior tongue
How do you test vagus nerve?
Have patient say “ah” and watch for elevation of soft palate
What does accessory nerve test?
Muscle testing of trap
How do you test the hypoglossal nerve?
Tongue will deviate towards injured side when stuck out
What are the clearing tests for the shoulder?
Hand behind back with over pressure
Hand behind head with over pressure
What are the clearing neck tests?
With or without over pressure in all cardinal planes
What is the upper rib cage clearing test?
Cervical rotation and lateral flexion towards side being tested (positive if lateral flexion is blocked)
