upper limb nerve injuries Flashcards
cause axillary nerve damage
fracture surgical neck of humerus, anterior dislocation
motor and sensory loss axillary nerve damage and what position is arm held in
loss of deltoid and teres minor- internally rotated and adducted
loss of sensation in regimental badge area
cause radial nerve damage
mid shaft humeral fracture
motor and sensory loss radial nerve damage and what position is arm held in
loss of triceps brachia and posterior forearm, causes wrist drop and no wrist extension
loss of sensation in back upper limb and hand, thumb index and middle and posterior hand
cause musculocutaneous damage
axilla wound
motor and sensory loss musculocuaneous nerve damage and what position is arm held in
loss BBC, weakened elbow flexion and suppination
loss of sensation in lateral forearm
cause median nerve damage
supracondylar fracture humerus, trauma/laceration at wrist/carpal tunnel
motor and sensory loss median nerve low nerve damage
- LOAF paralysis causing weakness of flexion and opposition when making a fist
- numbness in thumb index and middlefingers
motor and sensory loss median nerve high damage
hand of benediction
- can only flex little and ring fingers when making a fist
- loss of FDL, FDS half of FDP and LOAF
cause of high ulnar nerve injuries
fracture of medial epicondyle, compression in cubital fossa
cause of low ulnar nerve injuries
trauma/laceration, compression in guyons canal
symptoms low ulnar nerve lesion
-hypeextension MCP and flexion of PIP due to loss of lumbricals 3/4 and they cannot oppose the extensor muscles on back of hand. unopposed flexion. FDP intact and so can still flex DIP joints
symptoms high ulnar nerve lesion
lose function of FCU and FDP and so cannot flex Dip joints. less pronounced deformity (ulnar paradox)
