Upper limb - muscles and nerves Flashcards
Posterior muscles positioning shoulder
-Trapezius
-Rhomboid major
-Rhomboid minor
-Levator scapulae
Anterior muscles positioning shoulder
-Pectoralis minor
-Serratus anterior
3 parts Trapezius is divided into
-descending (superior)
-transverse (middle)
-ascending (inferior)
Trapezius: action of descending (superior) trapezius
Elevate the scapula
Trapezius: action of middle (transverse) trapezius
Retract the scapula
Trapezius: action of ascending (inferior) Trapezius
Depress the scapula, lower the shoulder
Trapezius: action of descending AND ascending trapezius - TOGETHER
They act together to rotate glenoid cavity superiorly
Trapezius: attachments

Shoulder girdle: name the posterior muscles (4)
trapezius, rhomboid major, rhomboid minor, levator
scapulae
Shoulder girdle: name the anterior muscles (2)
pectoralis minor, serratus anterior
what are the 3 divisions of the trapezious?
descending/superior = elevate the scapula
middle = retracts the scapula
ascending/inferior = depress scapula, and lower the
shoulder
descending and ascending fibers work together to
rotate the glenoid cavity superiorly
Red: What muscle is this? Where does it attach?
- trapezius: extends along the neck and superior
half of the trunk - attaches the pectoral girdle (clavicle and scapula) to
the neck and vertebral column
Blue: What 2 muscles are this? Where do they attach?
- rhomboid minor on top (red), rhomboid major on
bottom (green) - extends inferolaterally from the vertebral column to
the medial border of the scapula
difference between rhomboid major and minor?
minor is thicker and narrower
major is thinner but wider
action of the rhomboid major and minor ?
work together to retract the scapula and rotate the
glenoid cavity inferiorly
Green: What muscle is this? Where does it attach?
levator scapulae
- lies partially deep to the trapezius
- connects cervical vertebrae to the superomedial
border of the scapula
