disorders / dysfunction Flashcards
Osteoarthritis commonly affects these 2 joints
- Distal interphalangeal
- carpometacarpal
Rheumatoid Arthritis commonly affects these 2 joints
- Proximal interphalangeal
- metacarpophalangeal
FOOSH meaning
Fall On Out-Stretched Hand, could involve hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder
Common FOOSH fracture
Colles Fracture - distal forearm, broken radius bent backwards. Pain, swelling, bruising, damage to median nerve.
What is the most common carpal bone fracture?
Scaphoid fractures: compromise blood flow, leading to necrosis (bone death)
What is Osteoarthritis (OA) and what does it result in?
- Thinning of cartilage = bones rub
- leads to hard + bony joints
What is Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and what does it result in?
- Autoimmune condition resulting in swollen + inflamed synovial membrane
Describe a shoulder subluxation?
Head of humerus gets shifted out of alignment with the glenoid cavity
When does shoulder subluxation commonly occur, and why?
When: occurs commonly in stroke survivors (80%)
Why: d/t oss of motor function in muscles that support the glenohumeral joint
Describe a shoulder dislocation?
Head of humerus gets fully pushed out of
the glenoid cavity
Common cause of shoulder dislocation
sports injuries and car accidents
What type (anterior or posterior) of shoulder dislocation is by far the most common?
Anterior dislocation
What is partial shoulder separation and which joint would it impact? (A or B)
A. Acromioclavicular joint: Partial shoulder separation occurs when acromioclavicular ligament gets damaged and, as a result,
acromioclavicular joint gets dislocated
