Upper limb 4 Flashcards
what are the extensor muscles of the forearm which act on the wrist?
extensor carpi radialis longus
extensor carpi radialis brevis
extensor carpi ulnaris
what is the actions of the extensor carpi radialis longus and bravis on the wrist joint?
extension and abduction
what muscles extend the medial 4 fingers?
extensor digitorum
extensor indicus
extensor minimi
what muscles extend the thumb?
extensor pollicis longus and braves
what muscle abducts the thumb?
abductor pollicis longus
what is the nerve supply of all the extensor muscles?
radial nerve
what is the nerve supply of the brachioradialis and what is its main action?
radial nerve
flexes the elbow (only muscle in the posterior compartment that flexes and doesn’t extend)
where does the radial nerve divide into 2 branches?
what are the names of these 2 branches?
what do these 2 branches supply ?
cubital fossa
superficial and deep (posterior interosseous nerve)
superficial is sensory and supplies skin of the dorsal of the hand. deep supplies extensor muscles
what is a colles fracture?
fracture to the distal radius
results in dinner fork deformity
usually results from breaking a fall by putting arms behind back with wrists extended
what two carpal bones can you feel in the anatomical snuff box?
trapezius
scaphoid
tendons of which muscles make the anatomical snuff box?
abductor pollicis longus
extensor pollicis brevis
extensor pollicis longus
a fracture of the scaphoid bone in the wrist could injury what nerve?
radial nerve
what is the action of the abductor pollicis brevis?
abducts the thumb at the carpometacarpal joint
what is the extensor expansion / dorsal digital expansion?
4 extensor digitorum tendons flatten to form extension expansions.
they form an aponeurosis which wraps around the dorsal and sides of the metacarpal and base of the proximal phalanx
what muscles attach to the extensor expansion?
palmar and dorsal interossei
lumbricals
extensor indicis
