Lower limb 3 Flashcards
what nerves supply the 3 compartments of the legs?
anterior - deep fibular nerve
lateral - superficial fibular nerve
posterior - tibial nerve
what are the main muscles in the anterior compartment of the lower limb?
tibialis anterior
extensor hallucis longus
extensor digitorum longus
fibularis teritus
what artery supplies the dorsal aspect of the foot?
dorsalis pedis artery
what are the 2 divisions of the sciatic nerve and where does the nerve usually branches into these?
common fibular nerve
tibial nerve
what branch of the common fibular nerve innervates the anterior compartment of the lower leg?
deep fibular nerve
what branch of the common fibular nerve innervates the lateral compartment of the lower leg?
superficial fibular nerve
what artery supplies the dorsum of the foot?
anterior tibial artery - dorsalis pedis
what is the arterial supply of the ankle and foot?
anterior - anterior tibial artery (which becomes dorsalis pedis)
posterior - posterior tibial artery
lateral - fibular artery
what are the muscles of the lateral compartment of the lower limb and what is their nerve supply?
fibularis longus
fibularis brevis
- superficial fibular nerve
what is the actions of the muscles of the fibularis longus and brevis?
evert the foot and plantar flexes the ankle
what clinical sign would damage to the common fibular nerve ?
foot drop
damage to what nerve would cause a foot drop and how?
common fibular nerve
deep fibular nerve supplies muscles of the anterior compartment of the leg which are involved in extension of the toes and flexion of the ankle.
with this nerve being damage it results in the foot unable to dorsiflex
the lateral compartment supplied by superficial fibular nerve caused plantar flexion but this is only weakly.
how can damage to the common fibular nerve occur?
fracture to the neck of the fibula
what type of joint is the ankle?
synovial hinge
in what position is the ankle joint unstable?
planar flexion
