What are some disease causes of aphthous mouth ulcers?
Bechets disease, coeliac disease, crohns disease
What are some causes of oral candidiasis?
asthma inhalers, diabetes, immunosuppression, HIV, lymphoma
What is orofacial granulomatosis?
Associated with IBD, rare condition, lip swelling and ulcers in the floor of the mouth and buccal mucosa
What is hiatus hernia?
portion of the stomach passes into chest cavity, usually asymptomatic but can interfere with lower sphincter causing GORD
What are medical treatments for GORD?
PPI treatment, H2RA such as famotidine, anti-reflux surgery
What is barretts oesophagus?
Implicated by acid reflux. Cell changes in the lining of the oesophagus that can lead to cancer. Sometimes will regress with high dose PPI
What is oesophageal strictures?
Luminal narrowing often causing dysphagia. Can be benign or malignant. Normally caused by reflux.
What is the name of the condition where the oesophagus sphincter is completely tight and doesn’t allow liquid.
Achalasia
What is the treatment of achalasia?
Botox, pneumatic dilation, helier’s cardiomyotomy
What is the prognosis of oesophageal carcinoma?
Poor, often treated palliatively.
What causes majority of chronic gastric ulcers?
H pylori
