What are the symptoms of chronic gastritis?
Upper abdominal pain Bloating or indigestion Nausea and vomiting Belching Loss of appetite or weight loss
What is chronic gastritis?
Ongoing inflammation of the stomach mucosa
What can cause chronic gastritis?
Helicobacter pylori infection Alcohol Tobacco Psychological stress Caffeine Autoimmune - can lead to pernicious anaemia
What is H.pylori and where is it found?
Gram negative bacteria found in the stomach
What is the clinical presentation of H.pylori?
80% asymptomatic 5-15% peptic ulcer disease 10% non ulcer dyspepsia 1-3% gastric adenocarcinoma 0.5% gastric MALToma
What is H.Pylori strongly associated with?
Chronic gastritis and duodenal ulcer
Where does peptic ulcer disease usually occur?
D1 or Antrum
What are common causes of peptic Ulcers?
H.pylori and NSAID’s
What are the symptoms of peptic ulcers?
Pain - worse at night and worse after meals
What happens in Barrett’s oesophagus?
Normal lining of the oesophagus replaced with columnar epithelium and goblet cells.
What is Barrett’s oesophagus associated with?
Adenocarcinoma
What are the types of cancer you can get in the oesophagus?
Squamous carcinoma
Adenocarcinoma
What type of cancer can you get in the stomach?
Adenocarcinoma

Lymphoma
