What is the management of a general upper GI bleed i.e. not varices specific?
A
ABCDE. early senior help and ?HDU.
?major haemorrhage call.
NBM, catheter, PPI cover - omeprazole (80mg then 40bd).
Bloods: FBC, U and E, LFT, coat, cross match (4-units), amylase, +/- hamocue and ABG.
Calculate blatchford score for ?endoscopy.
Prophylactic antibiotics.

What is the specific management of a variceal bleed?
A
general measures then:
vasoconstrictor drugs (e.g. terlipressin and octreotide) Sclerotherapy and elastic band ligation are widely used with endoscopy.
prophylactic ab and prevent recurrance with BB and banding or TIPPs.
