What are the main clinical signs of carpal canal syndrome?
Carpal sheath effusion
Lameness/pain exacerbated on flexion
Radial fractures are common due to external trauma or kicks, especially in what part of the radius? What are the clinical signs?
Distomedial radius
Moderate swelling and lameness, but can weight-bear if incomplete #
A horse suffers an open or complete fracture of the radius. What is the treatment?
Euthanasia
What is the treatment for a closed, incomplete radial fracture?
Conservative management - caudal and lateral splint (by shoulder)
Cross tie to stop going up and down
Surgical - internal fixation in foals
How are ulnar fractures treated in horses?
First aid - splint to carpus
Conservative or surgical (plate in adults, pins/wires foals)
If a horse has a complete humeral fracture, how is it treated?
Euthanasia
Are fractures of the humerus and scapula managed surgically?
No - conservative
PTS if complete
How is OCD of the elbow treated?
Conservative - intra-articular medications
Surgical - extra-articular drilling

Miniatures Shetlands
Other Miniatures
How is shoulder dysplasia/subluxation treated?
Reduction under GA - likely to recur
Can have arthrodesis but most euthanised
Shoulder OA is rare in horses and causes moderate-severe lameness. What is the treatment and prognosis?
Tx: palliative
Poor prognosis
Is elbow OA common in horses?
No
Often secondary to trauma, sepsis, OCLL
How is elbow OA managed in horses?
Intra-articular medication
NSAIDs
