Upper Body Muscles Flashcards
Deltoid muscle
One muscle but is typically considered 3 (anterior, lateral, & posterior
Serratus Anterior
Actions: protracted scapula
Actions: stabilize Scapula
Actions: synergists in upward rotation of the scapula
Latissimus Dorsi
Actions: Adduction humerus
Actions: extends humerus
Actions: medial rotation of humerus when insertion is moved towards origin
Actions: powerful rotator of the trunk
Teres Major
Actions: abducts humerus
Actions: Medially rotates humerus
Actions: extends humerus from flexes position
Actions: protracted scapula
Pectoralis Major
Actions: abducts humerus
Actions: Medially rotates humerus
Actions: draws the scapula anteriorly and inferiorly
Pectoralis minor
Actions: Depressed scapula or elevates ribs
Anterior Deltoid
Works in tandem with subscapularis, pectorals and lat. dorsi to Medially Rotates humerus
Lateral deltoid
Action: Medially rotates humerus
Actions: transverse abduction when the shoulder is in a lateral rotation
Prosterior deltoid
Actions: extends the shoulder (in connection with other muscles)
Biceps Brachii
Actions: flexes elbow, flexes shoulder, abducts shoulder, supinates radioulnar joint in forearm
Brachialis
Actions: Flexion at elbow joint
Triceps Brachili
Actions: extends forearm
Actions: long head: abducts humerus, extends humerus
Rhomboids (major & minor)
Actions: retracts scapula
Actions: rotates scapula
Actions: holds scapulae into thoracic wall
Actions: slight elevation of sacpula (minor)
Lavatory Scapula
Actions: elevates scapula, retracts scapula, rotates scapula, laterally flexes neck)
Trapezius
Rotates scapula Retracts scapula Elevates scapula Depresses scapula Extends neck
Large muscle usually broken into 3 parts
1 upper
2 middle
3 lower
