Untitled Deck Flashcards
In what forms can mixtures be?
Gas, liquid, or solid.
What are compounds made of, and in what structure?
Some compounds are made up of molecules, whilst others are made of crystal lattices.
What are some examples of compounds?
H2O, NaCl
What are some examples of elements?
Phosphorus, sulfur, and various metals.
What are some examples of molecules?
O=C=O (CO2), H=O=H (H2O), C6H12O6
What are the properties of compounds like?
They are usually very different from the properties of the atoms that they are made up of.
What are the properties of molecules?
Molecules of the same type are always identical in size, shape, and number of atoms.
What is a compound?
Substances made up of more than one type of atom or chemical element combined in a fixed ratio. It is a pure substance made of the same type of molecules which are made of several atoms.
What is a mixture?
A substance formed when elements and compounds are combined. A substance made of several types of elements and/or compounds which are mixed (not joined by bonds).
What is a molecule?
It is a group of atoms within compounds which are often small and contain just a few atoms. It is a particle made up of atoms that are bonded together.
What is an element?
Substances that are made up of just one type of atom. Any substance that cannot be decomposed into simpler substances through ordinary chemical processes.
