Is the Flag Code required by law?
It is recommended guidelines, not law
When flags of 2+ nations are flown on separate staffs…
…staffs are same height, flags go in alphabetical order at United Nations
When carried in a procession with other flags…
…the US flag should be marching right/front and at the center of a line of flags
When displayed with crossed staffs on a wall…
…the US flag should be to the viewers left with its stand in front
When multiple flags are on the same staff…
…the flags should be flown below the US flag (except for chaplain’s flag in church)
When raising and lowering the flag…
…the flag should be raised quickly and lowered slowly
When the flag is flown at half-staff…
…the flag should be raised the the top before half-staff (same process to take down at night)
When flag is displayed in a church/auditorium…
…if on stage, flag should be on speaker’s right. If on floor, flag should be on audience’s right
When used on the wall behind a speaker in a church/auditorium…
…flag should be above the speaker and the union of the flag should appear over their left shoulder
When should the flag be shown on public buildings?
Only in good weather during the daytime (except at evening occasions when flag is illuminated)
When the flag is damaged…
…it should be disposed with a flag burning ceremony

…decoration, drapery, advertising
When used for military purposes…
…the union of the flag should be on the left shoulder of the deceased in the casket, the flag is never lowered into the grave/sea
