When and why was the UN formed?
Formed in 1945 to prevent widespread destruction after WW2
What is the General Assembly body?
parliament and voting body of UN. each country has 1 vote. makes recommendations to the security council. decides on admission of new members. develops UN budget
What is the Secretariat body?
comprises the staff of the Secretary General who carry out day-to-day work as mandated by General Assembly and other principal organs.
What is the International Court of Justice and it’s role?
Judicial body of UN based in Hauge. Role: to settle disputes according to principles of international law.
What is the Security Council?
maintenance of international peace and security. has the power to impose sanctions or authorise the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security
What is the Economic and Social Council?
the principle body responsive for economic, social, and environmental issues. I’m charge of implementation of internationally agreed development goals. UN’s central body for reflection, debate, and innovative thinking on sustainable debate.
What is the Trusteeship Council?
Provided international supervision for 11 Trust Territories and ensure they are prepared for self-government and independence. Independence granted in 1994 - council now suspended operations.
What is the UN Charter?
Outlines the rights and obligations of the memebers of the UN
What are the purposes of the UN stated by it’s charter?
Maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations between nations, cooperate in solving international problems of economic, social, environmental, cultural, and humanitarian nature, promote respect for human rights
What principles does the charter state the UN should act in accordance with?
Sovereign equality of its members, peaceful settlement of international disputes, refraining from the threat/use of force against any nation, non-intervention in matters with if the domestic jurisdiction of any nation
