Public inquiry bodies appointed by executive government to advise or investigate issues of public importance- often human rights matters
What role do Royal Commissions pay in protecting Human Rights?
Impartial source of judgement. Investigate issues of public importance and human rights complaints. Scrutinise Australia’s performance in meeting international human rights commitments.
What are the powers of a Royal Commission and what is it’s act?
Royal Commission Act (1902) Powers of investigation: ability to call/cross-examine witnesses, right of entry and ‘phone-tapping’ whilst providing protection to witnesses and inquiry members from legal action
What is Royal Commissions importance?
Over 120 at commonwealth level. A last resort of governments when an issue of public importance/sensitivity needs to be investigated but seen as independent from the process.
