Unit1Topic7 - Quantitative Flashcards
RAM
Relative atomic mass of an atom is the mass of the atom compared with that of the carbon-12 isotope, which has a mass of exactly 12
RFM/RMM
Relative formula mass/relative molecular mass can be found by adding together all the atomic masses of all the atoms in the formula of the element or compound
Moles
The RFM of a substance in grams is known as one mole of that substance
% of an element in a compound
Mass of element in one mole of the compound/ mass of one mole of the compound x 100
% yield
Actual mass / theoretical mass x 100
Possible reasons why yield is less that 100%
Side reactions
Impossible to separate the product fully out of the reaction mixture
Empirical formula
Is the simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element present in a compound
Molecular formula
Shows the actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule
Hydrated
Crystalline and containing water molecules
Anhydrous
A substance containing no water molecules
Water of crystallisation
Water molecules that form an essential part of the crystalline structure of a compound
How can water of crystallisation be removed?
By heating to a constant mass to ensure all water molecules have been removed
