Unit Two: Rate of Reaction Flashcards
1
Q
Name three examples of different speeds of reactions:
A
Slow- rusting of iron
Medium- a metal reacting with acid to produce a gentle stream of bubbles
Fast- an explosion
2
Q
What four things do the rate rate of a reaction depend on?
A
Temperature
Concentration (pressure for gases)
Catalyst
Surface area of solids (or size of solid pieces)
3
Q
Precipitation:
A
Precipitation: when the product of a reaction is a precipitate which clouds the solution
- Observe a mark through the solution and measure how long it takes to disappear
- The quicker the mark disappears, the quicker the reaction
- Only works when the initial solution is quite see through
- Subjective
4
Q
What are the ways which the rate of reaction can be measured?
A
Precipitation, change in mass, volume of gas given off
5
Q
Change in mass (usually has given off):
A
- Carried out on a mass balance
- The quicker the reading on the balance drops, the faster the reaction
- Rate of reaction graphs are easy to plot using this method
- Most accurate
6
Q
The volume of gas given off:
A
- Involves the use of a gas syringe
- The more gas given off during a given time interval, the faster the reaction
- Rate of reaction graph (plot)
- Quite accurate (measures to nearest mm)
