Unit Three: Reversible Reactions Flashcards
What is a reversible reaction?
A reaction where the products of the reaction can themselves react to produce the original reactants
What is equilibrium?
When the amounts of reactants and products will reach a certain balance and stay there
In what conditions will a state of equilibrium always be reached?
If a reversible reaction takes place in a closed system
What is a closed system?
When none of the reactants or products can escape
What does the position of equilibrium (the relative amounts of reactants and products) depend on?
The temperate and pressure surrounding the reaction-these can both be altered to give more or less product
What happens if you raise the temp in a reaction?
What if you reduce the temp in a reaction?
The endothermic reaction will increase to use up the extra heat
The exothermic reaction will increase to give out more heat
What happens if you raise the pressure in a reaction?
What happens if you lower the pressure in a reaction?
It will encourage the reaction which will produce less volume
It will encourage the reaction which produces less volume
