Unit one- the study of biology Flashcards
Hypothesis
An educated guess/prediction
Experiment
A series of tests performed to answer a question
Theory
An idea explaining something. Unlike a proven fact, a theory could be wrong because it had no proof but has a likelihood
Scientific method steps
1 observe 2 question 3 hypothesis 4 testing 5 conclusion
Why is the scientific method an ongoing process
Many times during the scientific method you will have to make changes to your experimenting, do more research, etc. After reaching conclusions, there are still more questions/tests that can be added.
7 characteristics of all living things
Cells DNA Reproduce(sexual/asexual) Grow and develop Metabolism React and adapt to environment Homeostasis
Compare and contrast asexual and sexual reproduction
Sexual -two parents ASexual - one payment Identical offspring
Both produce offspring
Homeostasis and example
How the body is able to keep a good internal environment. Negative feedback loop- body changes and works to keep the internal environment stable throughout these changes(ex-exercising- body temp)
Positive feedback loop- body notices changes and continues to cause more changes (ex- childbirth, stress)
Metabolism
A biology process includes chemical reactions that break down materials
Why do organisms and cells complete the process of metabolism?
To produce energy and burn fat
