Religion Semester One Final Flashcards
Creation
We are all called to praise God
Creation is evidence of the power of God
Creation was made by the three persons of the trinity (holy spirit, son, father)
An example that we should not only believe the things we see but also things (such as creation) that we didn’t see happen
Well, the creation stories are figurative, we read them for the message and not the literal interpretation
Earthy realm vs heavenly realm
Humans (both genders) are created in God’s image and our soul ties us to God. We must serve and love God
God is love and all God created is good
Review both creation stories and stuff
Dignity of Creation/ People
FINISH
Original Sin/The Fall
Adam and Eve realize they are naked after eating the forbidden fruit. This symbolizes guilt and shame. They are also ashamed for God to see them. Then they blame each other (this symbolizes that they lost their original holiness and justice). This story shows that only God knows true good from evil and we are not God. Consequences : original sin, women have to give birth to children, people have to do labor in order to survive, loss of original holiness and justice
Covenants

Reasons for the incarnation
To reconcile is t\with God through the forgiveness of sins
Expiation
That we might know the depth of God’s love
Because of The Fall, humans did not understand God’s unconditional love for us
To be our model of holiness
Jesus Christ is perfect holiness. He is a role model for us and how to be holy
To make us partakers of the Divine Nature
Christ wants us to share in His divinity . Brings us into a deeper relationship
To destroy the power of the devil

Passion def
The suffering of Jesus during his final days in this life: his agony in the garden at gethsemane, his trial, and crucifixion
main events of the passion
Jesus enters Jerusalem
- the last supper
- garden of gethsemane
- trial before Sanhedrin
- trial before Pilate
- The scourging
- crucifixion
- Jesus’s death
Jesus enters Jerusalem
Jerusalem was the center of the Jewish faith
- crowds welcomed him as a king (leaders wanted to kill him starting around this time)
- he went to the temple and people were selling things and using it as a marketplace. He told them how awful this was and turned over their tables. This is when more people really start to want to kill him Gospels of Mark and luke say that this was when people started wanting to kill him
The last supper
Thursday evening
- Passover celebration w/apostles
- Jesus washes apostles feet. This shows that leadership is service and shows an example of how things shall be when he leaves.
- Jesus says he is the paschal lamb—> Eucharist
Garden of Gethsemane
Thursday night
- goes with apostles to garden to pray (he is fearful but knows what he has to do)
- meanwhile, Judas is leading Jewish leaders to arrest Jesus (turns him in with a kiss)
- Adam disobeyed God in a garden and Jesus obeys Him (also in a garden )
Trial before sanhedrin
questioned Jesus
- they were determined to show that he was guilty. This was very hard for them.
- trail was done privately because they didn’t want a bunch of riots
- say Jesus is guilty of blasphemy
- (Jewish leaders are not allowed to condemn him because they are under Roman leaders)
Trial before Pilate
Friday
- Pilate don’t care about Jewish religious laws so they accused him of treason (says he is putting himself in place of a king) instead
- some gospels say Pilate did not actually think Jesus was guilty
- Jesus knows he will be found guilty
The scourging
scourged and humiliated
- Roman executions were meant to scare people so they follow the law
- crowned with thorns and clothed in purple cloak (to mock that he claimed to be a king)
- scourged with a whip with bone and metal in it (this tore his skin and this itself could have killed him)
Crucifixion
Friday
- carries cross on bloody back
- carries the weight of OUR sins
- golgotha
- stripped of his clothes to humiliate him
- nailed to cross
- fulfills MANY Old Testament prophecies
