Location
Where are you? two ways to know location.
- absolute
- based on longitude and latitude
- relative
- based on what is around you.
Longitude
Vertical lines across globe. The prime meridian is a line of longitude
Latitude
Horizontal lines that go across the globe. The equator is a line of latitude.
Place
What a place is LIKE - characteristics
- Land, shape, plants, animals, climate.
- language, clothes, buildings, music, industry, etc.
most common characteristic is the toponym

Name given to a place in earth
Site
Physical characteristics and location of a place
Ex: climate, water, vegetation, etc.
Situation
Location relative to other places
Region
Areas that share common characteristics
- physical(climate, landscape, etc)
- human traits (language, religion, political boundaries , etc. )
- cultural landscape
- formal region / uniform region/ homogeneous region
- functional (nodal) region
- vernacular/ perceptual region
Cultural landscape
Combination of cultural features (language, region, etc. )
Formal region/ uniform region/ homogeneous region
An area within which everyone shares a common one or more distinctive characteristics. Has clear boundaries.
Functional(nodal) region
Are organized around a focal point

Vernacular/ perceptual region
Based on cultural identity

Human- environment interaction
- How humans change/ modify the environment
- how the environment influences it limits the people who live there.

Physical/ environment causes social environment - need a stable environment for human life.
Possibilism
Environment may limit some human actions, but humans can adjust the environment
- ex: in the Netherlands, there was a lot of water and flooding. In result, the Dutch made dukes and polders.
