Unit One, Chapter Sixteen - Kinetics Flashcards
What is kinetics?
The study of factors which alter the rates of chemical reactions
State the overall rate equation
Rate= k[A]^m[B]^n
What does K represent in the overall rate equation?
Rate constant (dependant on temperature)
What do m and n represent in the overall rate equation?
The orders of the reaction with respect to the reactants (A and B)
What do [A] and [B] represent in the overall rate equation?
Concentration of reactants A and B
If a reaction is [A]^0 (zero order with respect to A)…
… Doubling concentraran has no effect on rate of reaction
It a reaction is [A]^1 (first order with respect to A)…
… Doubling concentration of A doubles the rate of reaction
If a reaction is [A]^2 (second order with respect to A)…
… Doubling concentration quadruples rate of reaction
State the units for each OVERALL reaction order
1st order = s^-1 (or min^-1)
2nd order = mol^-1ls^-1 (“”)
3rd order = mol^-2l^2s^-1 (“”)
How to find overall reaction order
Sum of powers of concentrations of reactants (m + n)
What is a reaction mechanism?
A set of theoretical steps proposed to account for the reactants being converted into products
What name is given to the slowest step in the reaction?
The rate-determining step
